Recipes for Failure

Member Newsletters

Home office designs, composes, and publishes all member newsletters and manages all mailing lists. This is done to minimize the workload for each team, minimize overlapping mailing lists, and maintain a consistent and unified global brand.

Teams should not rely on newsletters as the only means to promote their events. Those that do usually lose traction very quickly. Click here for more details.

Newsletters & Publication Schedules

  1. Global Newsletters

Global newsletters are typically issued once a month to everyone on our mailing list and look like this. They include happy hour details, the latest jobs posted to our Jobs Database, upcoming events, and newest members.

  2. City-specific Newsletters

City-specific newsletters are typically issued once a month and look similar to our global newsletters, except that all content - jobs, new members, events - is specific to your city.

    FOR ORGANIZERS:
The first 50 words of your Happy Hour venue blurb will automatically appear in your city-specific newsletters, so feel free to make edits to your venue blurb until you are satisfied with the way it appears in your newsletter. To preview your newsletter, first make sure your venue blurb is posted and then click here. In your web browser, change "city=Hong+Kong" to your city name and use the plus sign (+) if your city name has more than one word.

    OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS:
Encourage other community groups in your area to post their events on our Community Events Calendar, as their events will also be included in our city newsletters. Because we can't possibly be everything to everyone, our true value is in serving as an information clearinghouse for the community - by pointing our members to other events that may be of interest to them, and by helping other community groups to raise awareness of their activities. That is why we are "oriented". =)

  3. Friendly Reminders

These are text-based reminder notices that are emailed just before each ORIENTED Happy Hour to all those who have already RSVP'd for the events. Click here to see an example.

  4. Job Bulletins

Job Bulletins look like this and are usually issued around the 1st and the 15th of every month to all those who signed up to receive them. Included are all the job listings that have been posted to our jobs database.

Mailing Lists

Site visitors sign-up for our newsletters by clicking on the "Subscribe to Mailing List" link in the top navigation bar of this website. New Members are also directed to our mailing list(s) when they first join.

Some people sign-up for our newsletters but do not wish to become a member. Others are members but opt out of receiving our newsletters.

We do not purchase mailing lists or add email addresses without written consent, nor do we sell or share our database with any third parties (see privacy statement for additional information).

Instructions for Organizers

  1. Sign-up for our newsletters if you haven't already.

Look out for them per the schedules mentioned above.

If you believe you are not receiving our newsletters but should be (or if they are falling into your spam folders), please notify us asap as others may be experiencing the same problem.

  2. Note any complaints.

From time to time, people will tell us that they used to receive our newsletters but they don't any more and don't know why. If this happens, take down their name and email addresses so that we can investigate.
