How to Apply

Step 1: Get to know us

  1. Read through each section on the left.

If you live in a city where we currently host ORIENTED Happy Hours, attend a few before submitting your application.

  2. Read this news article.

  3. Watch these videos.

  4. Check out these Happy Hour photos.

Step 2: Let us get to know you

Send us your answers to the questions below using this online contact form, along with a link to your blog or resume.

Co-Head Organizers are asked to apply at the same time.

  1. Your Motivation: Which position are you applying for, and what is the main reason why you want to be involved? What motivates you?

  2. Community Service: What other organizations are you involved with, and in what capacity? Describe the last 2-3 events you helped to organize.

  3. Local promotions: Are you a natural when it comes to promoting an event? Please explain your answer. How many people would come, if you were to organize a happy hour "solo"?

  4. Duration: Can you meet expectations #1-6? Why or why not?

  5. More about You: Where do you work and what do you do? What is your ethnicity, and what languages do you speak? Where are you originally from, how long have you been in your current place of residence, and how long do you intend to stay?

  6. Resignation Duties: Upon resignation, we ask organizers to find and train their replacements prior to their departure so as not to unfairly burden their teams or negatively affect the continuity of their events. Is this something you can do?

  7. Team Cancellation: After three warnings of missed due dates, your team may be asked to discontinue operations, and a new team will be recruited. If your team is cancelled for this reason, will you help us find new organizers? Why or why not?

  8. Reference Information: How did you hear about ORIENTED? If you have attended any ORIENTED events, let us know which ones. Do you know any of our Organizers who can personally recommend you? If selected, when can you start?

  9. For Co-Head Organizer Applicants: How do you know each other, and have you ever organized events together? Please explain.
Additional questions for applicants who wish to start ORIENTED Happy Hours in cities where we don't yet have a presence:

Before we start events in your city, we want to make sure there is a real demand for ORIENTED Happy Hours there. Do some preliminary research before answering these questions:

  • Are there other organizations in your city doing something similar? If yes, who are they, and why then would you want to start ORIENTED Happy Hours there?

  • If you are in an Asian city, what is the international business environment like there? Are there a lot of international professionals who would be interested in attending ORIENTED Happy Hours?

  • If you are in a non-Asian city, what other business or trade organizations (top 3) are actively providing networking events for professionals interested in doing business in Asia?

Step 3: Cruise through your Probation Period

  • For Co-Head Organizer applicants, including those in cities where we don't yet have Happy Hours:

If selected, you will be asked to organize a "trial run" Happy Hour per these instructions. A temporary posting code will be provided for your use.

Teams in new cities that successfully organize their trial runs must submit Items #1-5 below before they may officially begin. Normally, this takes 2-3 weeks for everyone to get their paperwork in, and another 5-7 days for the webmaster to set up the website. Thus, expect a 1-month delay between your trial run and your official first event. This is a good time to purchase your promotional materials and secure the next venue.

  • For Organizer and Crew Member applicants:

Once we receive your application, we will forward it to the Co-Head Organizers in your area.

If selected, you may be asked to help out at the next two (2) events as your Probation Period. Failure to attend either event may result in automatic disqualification, because we want to know that you are committed.

Step 4: Fill out the paperwork

Head Organizers and Organizers who successfully pass their Probation Periods will be asked to submit the following:

  1. Your Organizer Bio

Suggestions: Include your place of birth, ethnic background and languages spoken, where you grew up, where you went to school, your professional experience, your involvement with community service activities, hobbies and interests, countries/places visited, how you first learned about ORIENTED, and why you want to get involved. A twist of light humor is welcome.

    Examples: A, B, C, D, and E

  2. Two or three half-body photos

Color or B&W would work. Please do not send cropped photos or headshots that look like they came right out of 1950's high school yearbook. =)

  3. Your ORIENTED Member ID#

If you don't know your Member ID#, login to your member account and click on "Download Membership E-Card" to determine your Member ID#.

  4. A forwarding email address (for internal use only)

  5. A signed copy of our Volunteer Organizer Agreement

  6. New Head Organizers will have these additional duties.
Your name will be formally included in the ORIENTED Global Network once we receive the above information.

Important Note:
Please send the above information in one email. Any materials sent piecemeal will not be accepted due to the large number of incoming/outgoing organizers and sheer volume of coordination. ORIENTED email accounts will not setup until all of the information is received.

Step 5: Sign-up for our Mailing list

Sign-up for our mailing list if you haven't already to receive our happy hour newsletters and job bulletins.

These newsletters are sent to members in your area every month, so if you aren't receiving them for some reason, please let us know. It's important that *you* know what our members know!

Each time you receive them, be sure to forward them to your friends and colleagues as a reminder to attend our events.
